1986 рік, ЛАТВІЯ
10 липня 1986 року у Лієпаї (Латвія) починає працювати група із захисту прав людини «Гельсінкі-86». Метою групи у заяві її членів було «відкрито, без цензури та тиску ззовні, інформувати міжнародні організації про порушення, які вчиняються проти матеріальних та духовних цінностей наших народів, а також проти самого народу. Перегородити шлях брехні та терору; дати всім народам вільний вибір шляхів свого розвитку; дотримуватися принципів, висунутих у заключному документі Гельсінської конференції».
Згодом, 23 серпня 1988 року, саме ця група виступила як один з організаторів знаменитого «Балтійського шляху», мирного протесту, коли жителі Литви, Латвії та Естонії, тримаючись за руки, об’єднались у живий ланцюг завдовжки майже 600 км, з’єднавши Таллінн, Ригу і Вільнюс. В акції взяло участь близько двох мільйонів людей, які протестували проти розділу Європи та окупації Балтійських країн, Учасники акції ставили за мету привернути увагу світової спільноти до історичних подій, від яких постраждали країни Балтії.
Згодом багато членів групи були нагороджені найвищою нагородою Латвії – Орденом Трьох зірок.

The world in 1986
1986 was a year of great changes and great lessons, the most important of which was the Chernobyl accident.
Thus, 1986 was a fateful year for the whole world, especially for the countries that built Slavutych. Let’s look in 1986 together in a new column from TIC “World in 1986”?
1986, LATVIA
On July 10, 1986, the Helsinki-86 Human Rights Group began its work in Liepaja, Latvia. The aim of the group in the statement of its members was “openly, without censorship and outside pressure, to inform international organizations about violations committed against the material and spiritual values of our peoples, as well as against the people themselves. To block the path of lies and terror; to give all peoples a free choice of the ways of their development; adhere to the principles set out in the final document of the Helsinki Conference.”
Later, on August 23, 1988, this group was one of the organizers of the famous “Baltic Way”, a peaceful protest, when the people of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, holding hands, united in a living chain almost 600 km long, connecting Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius. The action was attended by about two million people protesting against the partition of Europe and the occupation of the Baltic States. The aim of the action was to draw the world’s attention to the historical events that affected the Baltic States.
Subsequently, many members of the group were awarded the highest award in Latvia – the Order of the Three Stars.
We are proud that there is a part of Latvia in Slavutych – the architectural ensemble of the Riga quarter is almost the most beautiful corner of our city. Visit!
